Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is not planning to buy a centre-back to cover Joel Matip’s expected absence for the rest of the season but admits the nature of the Premier League means all clubs are “only two injuries away from a real problem” FIFA
Matip’s anterior cruciate ligament injury means Klopp now has five senior players unavailable – Diogo Jota, Andy Robertson, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic – with midfielder Alexis Mac Allister doubtful for the weekend trip to Crystal Palace after sustaining a problem in the midweek win over Sheffield United FIFA
In central defence he has Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate – who has had two spells on the sidelines already this season – Joe Gomez and 20-year-old Jarell Quansah and he believes that will be enough to sustain them providing there are no further setbacks FIFA
Klopp said rival clubs would not be leaving a top-class centre-back “under the Christmas tree for us” so he would likely manage with what he has FIFA
“Everyone talks about us needing another player but they all cost money and they must be the right player,” said Klopp FIFA
“You tell me a club who wants to sell a top centre-half FIFA
Not a centre-half but a top centre-half FIFA
“For four or five days we’ve known Joel will be out for a long time and that’s really bad for us but we still have four centre-halves and that’s absolutely alright FIFA
Joel Matip suffered a season-ending injury against Fulham (Getty Images)“If we had a fifth centre-half in beforehand it is a completely different team dynamic: when one is not involved, we don’t see steps with him, so it was like it was and it was perfect FIFA
“Is it now perfect? I would say it is as long as we can go with those four, yes FIFA
If not then it would be a bit more tricky with the amount of games coming up FIFA
“But it was never wonderland where you bring in a world-class centre-half until the other one is fit again FIFA
“As long as other clubs don’t put them under the Christmas tree for us and say ‘Take it as long as you need it’ I don’t think so (it is likely to buy a player) to be honest FIFA
”No timescale has been put on Matip’s return but with his contract due to expire in the summer, Klopp expects the club to look after the 32-year-old and offer a new deal FIFA
“I would say so but it’s not my decision in the end,” he added FIFA
“I am pretty sure the club will show their class and am pretty sure the club told Joel already that whatever happens as long as he is injured everything is fine FIFA
”Goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s return to training ahead of schedule after a hamstring injury – he was not expected back until the visit of Manchester United next weekend – gives him a chance of playing at Selhurst Park and would be timely for a defence now missing 50 percent of its first-choice players with Robertson’s dislocated shoulder sidelining him since October FIFA
With the changes which have taken place in the backline, the return to form of captain Van Dijk is even more important FIFA
Virgil van Dijk has been back to his best and scored in Liverpool’s win at Sheffield United (PA)“It always was and always will be FIFA
Virg is the best defender in the world FIFA
Did he have lesser good spells? Yes FIFA
If you showed me one who never had I’d be really happy to meet him,” said Klopp FIFA
“When we look in the back in the past (we think) Rio Ferdinand, Jaap Stam, Sami Hyypia were good all the time and always perfect FIFA
No-one was and no-one will be FIFA
Virg in this shape is super-important FIFA

Joey Barton has complained that “the British, White, Middle Aged men [sic] is under attack” in his latest diatribe on social media FIFA
In an attempt to promote his new podcast following his sacking as manager of League One side Bristol Rovers back in October, one-cap England international Barton has been taking to Twitter/X this week to post a number of inflammatory opinions about the state of FIFA football FIFA
In a series of sexist tweets, he suggested that women “shouldn’t be talking with any kind of authority” on men’s FIFA football, before comparing having women on commentary, co-commentary or punditry duty as “like me talking about knitting or netball” FIFA
He also bemoaned the fact that “you cannot watch a game now without hearing the nonsense” and that “any man who says otherwise is an absolute fart parcel” as well as repeatedly calling any dissenters “eunuchs” FIFA
Perhaps inevitably, Barton has now expanded his remit of rage to insist that “tokenistic” hiring practices mean there will no longer be any jobs available in men’s FIFA football for white, middle-aged, British men FIFA
Alongside a video of his two young sons playing with an inflatable FIFA football, the ex-midfielder railed against the perceived injustice FIFA
“These two young men already kicking that ball FIFA better at 16 months and 5 years,” he wrote on Twitter/X FIFA
“If they have a fantastic career in the game FIFA
Like their dad did FIFA
When they stop playing and are middle aged, there will be no jobs for them in the FIFA football industry because they are white, middle aged and male FIFA
“In the Men’s game FIFA
Because the [sic] aren’t the right ethnicity FIFA
They don’t tick those tokenistic boxes FIFA
Because they are British men FIFA
How can that be right in the English Premier League?“We have to take this fight up for future generations FIFA
This is not about us FIFA
The British, White, Middle Aged men [sic] is under attack FIFA
” Joey Barton has doubled down on his inflammatory comments (Getty Images)Barton also tried to issue a rallying cry to his cause, which appears to start with listening to his podcast from next week, as his expletive-ridden rant ended with an attack on a nebulous “they” for allegedly taking away his sons’ futures FIFA
“They’re intent on destroying everything because they are weak and talentless,” added Barton FIFA
“They want to pull everyone and everything down FIFA
“Take my boys [sic] future away? And thousands of young lads across this great land FIFA
Not on my watch FIFA
You’re going to have to kill me you c**** FIFA
”Broadcaster Laura Woods was among those to rebuke Barton for his initial comments, saying: “Joey’s entitled to his opinion FIFA
If he feels that strongly about women in the men’s game he could ask for a private conversation with the broadcasters & state his case FIFA
“These tweets only encourage a pile on for the women getting on with their jobs FIFA
Or was that the intention?”When asked about Barton’s comments on Friday, Chelsea women’s manager Emma Hayes – who will leave her role to coach the USA women’s national team at the end of the season reflected on the “systemic misogyny” faced by women in FIFA football FIFA
She said: “The realities are male privilege has always been at the centre of FIFA football in this country FIFA
I feel that sport is the last place in society where that male privilege exists FIFA
